[COW] Intra-State War Data (v. 5.1) (Participants version)

“The Intra-state Dataset v4.0 was released with the other updated war data (inter-state war, extra-state war, and non-state war) in Resort to War: A Data Guide to Inter-State, Extra-State, Intra-state, and Non-State Wars, 1816-2007 by Meredith Reid Sarkees and Frank Whelon Wayman.[…] A second publication focusing upon only the intra-state wars (dataset v5.0) was published as A GUIDE TO INTRA-STATE WARS: An Examination of Civil, Regional, and Intercommunal Wars, 1816-2014, by Jeffrey S. Dixon and Meredith Reid Sarkees, which provided additional data and more detailed descriptions of each intra-state war.[…] Version 5.0 also marked the beginning of our plan to gather additional information about the participants in each war, and several of the innovations of version 5.0 were: the identification of more non-state actors; inclusion of data on the total state military personal; and information on the state and non-state theater armed forces. The version 5.0 dataset was not released along with the book because, due to publication errors, a number of wars were omitted from the book. Version 5.1 of the data is now being released along with this Codebook. Version 5.1 not only includes the data on the intra-state wars from 1816-2014 (including the omitted wars), but it also provides updated data on these wars that have become available since the book’s publication. Version 5.1 of the data continues COW’s traditional focus on the state actors in the intra-state wars. The dataset is composed of two files: Intra-state-Wars v.5.1; and Intra-state-States v5.1. The first (Wars) provides summary information on each war, identifying only the primary participants on each side, the overall dates of the war, and summary data on combatant deaths for each side and as a total. The second file (States) provides information on the war experience of the all of the individual states involved, including total armed forces and theater forces for each side;” (codebook, p. 1)

“Within the new expanded COW typology of wars, intra-state wars have been subdivided into three general types, based upon the status of the combatants: civil wars involve the government of the state against a non-state entity; regional internal wars involve the government of a regional subunit against a non-state entity; and intercommunal wars involve combat between/among two or more non-state entities within the state.” (codebook, p. 2)

“The COW Project introduced COW Wars v4.0, 1816-2007 in 2010. The paper “The COW Typology of War: Defining and Categorizing Wars (Version 4 of the Data)” by Meredith Reid Sarkees gives an overview of the COW war typology, the descriptions of the basic variables, coding rules and some of the changes since “Resort to Arms.” In March 2010, the New COW War List was released. On June 30, 2010, the Non-State War Data (v4.0) became available. On October 28, 2010, the Intra-State War Data (v4.0) was released and on April 6, 2020 the Intra-State War Data (v5.1) became available online. On March 1, 2011, the Inter-State War Data (v4.0) became available online. Finally, we released the Extra-State War Data (v4.0) on December 8, 2011.” (https://correlatesofwar.org/data-sets/cow-war/, 10/10/2023)
